The ‘Disgraced Horse’ in the title refers to the Beaten-Favourite horse, usually designated as ‘BF’. 

What is the “beaten favourite?” The “beaten favourite” is a horse that was considered the ‘favourite’, or most likely, horse to win a particular upcoming horse race but, unexpectedly, failed to win.

There are many different reasons why a much-fancied horse, in this case the favourite, might fail to win on the day. The fault, for example, might be that of the jockey. No matter how good a horse is, it would probably fail to win if it is badly ridden during the race.

A ‘beaten favourite’ is a well-respected horse: it would not have been considered the favourite unless the racing experts considered it good enough to win on the day. When the favourite horse fails to win, what usually happens soon afterwards is this…..the trainer, the owner(s) and so-called ‘connections’ try to recoup the money they lost when the horse failed to win. Usually, the trainer would get the horse ready to race again quite soon when it is still quite fit. This is done in the hope that, this time around, the horse would ‘deliver the goods’ and win…..thereby enabling the trainer, owner(s) and ‘connections’ to recoup some or all the money they lost when the horse failed to win last time.
